YBD Oxford

The Youth Business Development (YBD) competition has been a proud achievement in Entrepreneurship and Business Development by Saïd students over the last 5 years.

It works as follows.

What it is

Teams of 3-5 young entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world submit summary business proposals to SBS; the best are matched with mentors from among current MBA students. The teams and their mentors work on their business plans for three months through our dedicated online platform (http://youthbusdev.org) and then present them to a judging panel which includes senior finance practitioners. The winning team (or teams) are awarded a prize and offered continuing guidance in their project.

Who is involved

YBD was founded by current president Dan Marmar, an MBA alumnus of 2005/06 and current CEO Udara Peiris, an MFE alumnus of the same year and current doctoral student in Financial Economics. The advisory board is composed of Marc Jones, former Managing Director at JP Morgan and is chaired by Howard Jones of SBS’s Finance Faculty and former head of equity capital markets at BNP Paribas. It also includes Meng Zhao, a doctoral student in Entrepreneurship and Karan Rai, an MBA alumnus of 2008/09. Dean Colin Mayer, and previously Dean Anthony Hopwood, have personally supported the competition. The judging panel this year included Marc, Howard, James Mallinson, Portfolio Manager at ISIS Innovations and David Cottam, Founding Partner at Park Square Capital.

Who can participate

YBD inspires and equips youth entrepreneurs, ages 16-25, from diverse geographic and economic backgrounds, by using the Oxford MBA class as a knowledge transfer vehicle. Since 2006, SBS has made an annual worldwide call for youth to develop business solutions to the economic, social, and environmental challenges in their respective communities.

The Second National Call for Application of Research Internships (2009-2010)

The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR): This is a Kenyan non-governmental organization whose mission is to contribute to the strengthening of national research for health in Kenya.

This is done by providing support for multidisciplinary research to individuals and institutions, and engaging policy makers in formulation of health research policies that are evidence based.

The Consortium also contributes to the building of networks and communities in research for health.

Raising the profile of science among young Kenyans: One of the ways the Consortium aims to strengthen national health research is to facilitate the training and retention of young scientists, who are able to generate and use research findings within a multidisciplinary environment.

This is done at different levels of career progression. To this end, CNHR has initiated a national Internship Programme aimed at exposing young graduates to the option of choosing a life-long career in research. The inaugral class of ten interns (2008-2009) successfully completed their training in July, 2009.

The successful interns will benefit from close mentorship and supervision by senior researchers in various institutions across the country.

Some of the selected interns will have hands-on experience in multidisciplinary settings, others will work in laboratory/field conditions and be exposed to modern approaches of research using sophisticated diagnostic or analytical equipment.

Applicants invited from medical, biomedical, science and social disciplines: For purposes of raising the profile of science among a wide cross section of young graduates, applicants are invited from both public and private universities.

Young doctors, pharmacists, nurses, biomedical and social science graduates who have an interest are encouraged to apply.

The successful intern applicants are expected to be enthusiastic and motivated young graduates who understand the place of health research in the development of Kenya. They should be willing to dedicate their time working in field and/or laboratory research conditions, and should be conversant with the use of computers and the Internet as source of research information.

If the applicant is not able to commence in Semester II the scholarship offer will lapse and will not be available to the applicant in 2011.

Candidates are required to enrol in The University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University.

The University may only extend the duration of study under compassionate or compelling circumstances.

Where a student fails, or withdraws from courses in a given semester (or equivalent teaching period) such that the semester GPA (Grade Point Average) is less than 5.0 in two consecutive semesters, the student will be deemed to have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress and the scholarship will be terminated unless the University is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist.

If a student faces exceptional circumstances requiring him or her to return home, he/she may apply for a one year deferment of enrolment without loss of scholarship, provided this is approved under the student visa requirements.

In order to make a case for exceptional circumstances, a student will need to provide a detailed statement and independent supporting documentation e.g. a doctor’s certificate etc.

If a scholarship holder enrols in more than the standard load of 24 units per year, or in courses which increase the tuition fee beyond what is indicated in the scholarship offer letter, or enrols in courses at another institution, he or she shall be responsible for the payment of the additional tuition fees.
Students who complete a three-year degree may apply for an additional year, in an Honours program, but extension of the scholarship for the fourth year is subject to the decision of the relevant faculty.

Postgraduate students awarded a scholarship for a one year program for which there is a one and a half or a two year alternative program may apply for the scholarship to be extended, but the extension of the scholarship is subject to the decision of the relevant Faculty.

Examples of such an extension would be an upgrade from a Graduate Diploma to a Masters program, or a change from a Master of Commerce (Accounting) to a Master of Accounting and Finance program.

The scholarship covers 50% of the tuition fee cost of a program for the duration indicated in the scholarship award letter for study at the University of Adelaide.

Funding Information for Prospective Postgraduate International Students

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarship

The University of Edinburgh will offer a Scholarship to a student from Tanzania for postgraduate Master's study in any subject offered by the University for the 2009-2010 academic session.

The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania.

Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree in Economics and History.

He was the first Tanzanian to study at a British University and only the second to gain a University degree outside Africa.

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarship will cover the full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK.

In 2009-2010 the tuition fees and living costs will be covered by the University of Edinburgh, while the return flights will be covered by the Tanzania Edinburgh Community Association.

The scholarship will be tenable for one academic year. Eligibility

The scholarship will be awarded to a Tanzanian citizen who is normally resident in Tanzania, and who is accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master's programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

CriteriaThe scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit with candidates requiring a Bachelor Degree equivalent to a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree.

In addition to the above academic qualifications, the selection panel will also take into account the financial circumstances of applicants to ensure that as far as possible a student's financial situation does not impede a university education at the University of Edinburgh.
