Senior Epidemiologist/Surveillance Specialist

Location: Botswana - Gaborone
Based in Gaborone, Botswana, the SENIOR EPIDEMIOLOGIST/SURVEILLANCE SPECIALIST will be seconded to the MOH, Department of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care (DHAPC), and working under direct supervision of the Director of DHAPC.
Position Purpose:
The Senior Epidemiologist/Surveillance Specialist will work closely with MOH/DHAPC technical staff, funders and MOH partners, to provide technical leadership and guidance to support HIV/AIDS surveillance and epidemiology, including data collection, analysis and dissemination of national surveillance findings.
This position will help coordinate the development of complex surveillance national reports.
The position will coordinate with partners and collaborators, and will ensure consistency, timeliness and high standards in those efforts.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide technical leadership and expert advice to the Ministry of Health on HIV/AIDS surveillance and epidemiology, including data collection, analysis and dissemination of national surveillance findings
2. Provide technical support and capacity building in the development, implementation and monitoring of HIV surveillance
3. Train and mentor MOH/DHAPC staff involved in surveillance and epidemiology
4. Provide technical leadership and innovation in HIV prevention, special studies and evaluation that will give evidence-based programming and effective responsiveness to the HIV epidemic in Botswana
5. Design and oversee the conduct of HIV surveillance including data analysis, preparing reports 6. Advise and support national capacity building efforts for HIV surveillance and response through the development of training materials, guidelines and plans
7. Coordinate and oversee training activities including evaluation of training to ensure quality
8. Prepare necessary reports, presentations, and represent Government of Botswana MOH at various regional and international meetings on HIV surveillance and research.
9. Maintain up to date HIV surveillance data on the MOH website.
10. Collaborate with research organizations in country, the region and internationally in the design and implementation of HIV Surveillance and epidemiologic research
11. Travel within and outside of Botswana when necessary
12. Perform other duties as assigned Position Qualifications:
Required qualification:
Medical degree with specialization in Epidemiology Desirable: Postgraduate degree in public health and/or specialist qualification in epidemiology of communicable diseases, outbreak control and surveillance.
Competencies:
Ability to lead, coordinate and produce results; ability to adapt to a diverse socio-political and cultural environment.
Other skills:
Excellent knowledge of standard computer applications, including epidemiologic analysis
Experience:
At least 15 years national or international experience in communicable disease control especially HIV/AIDS and emerging infections.
