BACKGROUND:
Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Internews Network is seeking a Senior Journalism Advisor to lead a potential project in Rwanda. The objective of the program is to increase support among decision-makers for effective health and population policies and programs by strengthening the capacity of media to provide quality coverage of key health (particularly family planning and reproductive health), population, environment, youth and gender issues. The expected results are: to improve the ability of journalists to provide on-going relevant media coverage in a sensitive and appropriate manner in local languages; to improve the quality and quantity of programs aired on these key issues; and to help stimulate public discussion and inform policy-makers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
• Provide overall management and strategic direction of project and quality management of program deliverables.
• Oversee provision of in depth technical support through formal and in-house trainings to TV, print and radio journalists, enabling them to report effectively on health (particularly family planning and reproductive health), population, environment, youth and gender issues.
• Oversee development of curriculum for print, radio and TV journalism training.
• Provide on-going mentoring to journalism trainees at their media outlets as well as the Internews media resource center.
• Assist trainees with writing, research and production of quality stories for broadcast and publication on key health (particularly family planning and reproductive health) and population issues in harmony with the requirements of the funder and project deliverables.
• Oversee training of local organizations in advocacy and media relations.
• Coordinate with other in-country programs to ensure synergy of Internews activities.
• Coordinate and liaise with NGOs, international organizations, and local authorities.
• Hire and supervise local staff.
• Provide financial and administrative oversight to the project and ensure compliance with donor regulations.
• Ensure overall program goals and deliverables are met on a timely basis, write progress reports and program work plans as needed, and liaise with donor.
• Draft internal reports and program public relations documents/flyers to promote the program as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Prior experience in Africa, preferably in Rwanda.
• Prior experience working in two media (radio, television or print).
• Expertise reporting on health (particularly family planning and reproductive health), population, environment, youth and gender issues.
• Experience training journalists on health (particularly family planning and reproductive health), population, environment, youth and gender issues.
• Prior experience training organizations in advocacy and media relations.
• Prior experience administering U.S. government funded grants: experience and expertise in similar projects (journalism training, media development).
• Experience developing and implementing program monitoring and evaluation.
• Education: Undergraduate degree and relevance, graduate degree and relevance to field work – and 10 years industry experience.
• Experience working in cross-cultural environments.
• Strong interpersonal, writing and communication skills.
• Ability to read and interpret financial reports and budgets.
• French language skills required.
